    @mikesewlal77425 years ago I think you lose part of your soul when you "play the game" just to avoid being laid off. True integrity means being yourself and doing the best you can, regardless of corporate culture - which , for the most part , is crass and godless, and may one day end up on the Almighty's lay off list. ... 40

    @davejordan14585 years ago If your department sucks, move on before you get laid off. If the organization sucks, get out of there fast and find your next gig. Best gig is having your own business and being your own boss. 23

    @realjackpile4 years ago Great video. I wish I'd seen this a year ago. I just got laid off yesterday working as a Sr. Software consultant in a small kick ass team at a major insurance company. My performance was top notch and yet I got the axe. I knew the org due to Covid most likely was sweating bullets over costs. I was a cost center. My skills were falling out of what was needed next. While I was given some flimsy reasons the real reason was cost. And that is why I feel less bad emotionally but it still hurts not to be considered essential. ... 3

    @realjackpile4 years ago Other signs:
    1. Your peer becomes a pet and idolized by your boss or team lead
    2. You're not invited to core meetings. Leaving you in the cold.
    3. You have the skill and ask to work on an essential area but you are told it is "all spoken for". Your boss didn't make room for you.
    3. Your boss or team no longer react to your comments on Slack or chat medium you use.
    4. You show great work and it's not recognized or acknowledged.
    5. You are too late and should have found another gig sooner!

    @drop_messages62265 years ago The point of a job (or running your own company) is to make enough money to support yourself and someday retire. Company loyalty does not exist in any form, jobs can easily be offshored, downsized, automated etc. Learn skills to make yourself marketable and you will always be hireable. Being laid off is scary if you have no skills to compete in the job market. ... 7

    @essellejaye88084 years ago Acquisitions and mergers are another red flag.
    High salaries hurt the profit margin, and two teams working on similar products in the merged corporation are viewed as redundant.
    I've witnessed great (and well compensated) team members put into "integration" projects, only to find themselves unemployed after essentially training the other (lower cost) team on their product.
    It sucks, but as Darnell said, if you aren't in the profit center, you're in the cost center.
    Profit... Cost... If the business has to cut one, we know which one gets cut.
    If you're in the cost center, then keep your resume up-to-date.

    @DREQUANTHEDON4 years ago WOW!! This sounds scary and uncertain. Seems like you have to make yourself be this likable person in the corporate American dream rather than being who you really are in life. I hit all Darnell's red flags a long time ago and didn't know it. I did what was required and managed the other employees in my department. I wasn't that popular with other managers because I never joined them for lunch, didn't go to the company parties, or hung out with them. They had speculations but I really didn't care. I did speak up at the meetings, but they all took my questions/comments as challenging their agenda. The crazy thing is, after 14 years of my dedicated service to this company they shut down and tried to hide it. I decided the corporate side is not for me so I started my own creative business after the company dissolved nationwide. That was 11 years ago and I'm still here. It's a trip how we have to conform to whatever the company wants us to be only to see the company will either cut you off because they can or eventually close their doors all in the name of PROFIT.
    Thanks, Answer Man! Great video.
